The Universal Unconstant

According to the above. . .

. . . 4.6% of the universe is made up of atoms. That's you, me, trees, all my law books, DeLorean cars, cheeseburgers. . . Mars, Betelgeuse, the light that goes off in the fridge when you close the door. . . .

Where we are

I'm supposed to be studying for finals. Instead, I'm thinking about the universe. (I've already cleaned the kitchen, watered the houseplant, walked the dogs, walked the dogs again--all the things we do when we want to avoid studying for finals--so the universe was all that was left.)

I've always wondered where it is.

I mean, it has to be somewhere, right?

So where is it?

Seriously. Does anyone know?

We know that the universe is expanding from the big bang. Expanding from what point? Where? How did it get there? Are there more? How big will this one get?

I have no idea what any of this is, but it implies that dark matter is off-the-chart big. (And I always thought the biggest thing in the universe was the male ego.)

How Universe-savvy Are You?

Can you explain Dark Matter and Dark Energy?

  • Yes, and I will demonstrate this by leaving a 16-page comment below, with diagrams and charts to illustrate my answer.
  • Yes, but I'd rather not say.
  • Yes, but I don't want to embarrass you by explaining the obvious.
  • No. I thought Dark Matter was what was found behind Darth Vader's fridge.

NASA has a great explanation of what the universe is, and isn't.

Dr. Who taught me all I know

. . . about the universe and universal constants. For instance, I know that Dark Matter exists because:

  • DM (Dark Matter) > T (Truth, or even 'struth!) > F (Fiction), where ">" means both "greater than" and "stranger," and T includes DeLorean cars. Given that DM > F, there is therefore no way for F to be WRONG in its definitions of DM, only lacking in detail.
  • So DM could indeed be partially composed of fish fingers and custard? Presumably so, as DM, T, and F are not mutually exclusive.
  • The above logic may be suspect?

No, I have no idea at all what Dark Matter could possibly be. I understood the anti-matter concept from Star Trek, but dark matter leaves me in the dark vacuum of space: clueless.

No, seriously, do you know anything about where we are?

Isn't dark matter the one we scrub off the bottom of pots and pans? Enjoyed the hub! It made my life more complicated. LOL

Oh jpcmc--my pots and pans have accumulated a lot of dark matter over the years! Thanks for stopping by!

Dark Matter and dark Energy? That's easy. Just look out in the night sky. See the points of light? Those are stars, and they are our type of matter and energy. See the dark region between the points of light? That's Dark Matter and Dark Energy. If you want to differentiate between the two, just fly a spaceship through it. If you hit something, it's Dark Matter. If your spaceship is intact after flying through it, it's Dark Energy. :)

Cool, Wandererh--I'll just get my spaceship out of the garage and go for a spin--should have thought of that! Thank you for explaining. :)

You don't need to study for that test. I got all three of them right. You certainly will have no trouble at all.

Oh . . . that's not the one you meant?

Fun hub. I think distractions like to hang around goals. Naughty universe. ;)

I am in the middle of writing my first novel and then...I want to be a composer. So I struggle to write and keep writing.

Have fun Teresa taming your ideas. :)

Dark matter are all the answers you have floating about in your head ready for your finals. Once you've handed in your paper they become don't matter. Funny hub, but forget the dogs and get studying girl.

Raven--good luck with the novel and the music. I'm jealous of anyone with any musical talent. . . and thanks for coming by to read.

attemptedhumour--ha! I have a lot of "don't matter" accumulating in filing cabinets. Yeah, the dogs are too tired now to walk and are hiding from me, so I guess it's time to study. Thanks for reading.

The male ego *isn't* the biggest thing in the Universe?

As a male in good standing, I'm crushed!

(Which, I suppose, just proves you're right; some politicians and media folk whom we all know wouldn't be so easily deflated.)

This is a very interesting article.

I think a dark matter is something that troubles you until it is resolved. ;)

Okay, seriously, I have seen TV shows about it and the best I can come up with it is a fancy way to explain all the space in "space". I believe it is a theoretical construct, since as I understand, it can't be seen or measured.

I am much more comfortable with Anti-Matter thanks to Star Trek.

Nice article, very thought provoking!
